Who:
Jocelyn Lau
Role:
Senior Advocacy Director
Location:
I’m Singapore-based but I do a lot of traveling in the region for shoots. In the last few years my work has taken me to Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Korea, Thailand, India, Malaysia, China and Hong-Kong.
Languages:
I speak English and Mandarin. I often rely on good bi-lingual producers when it comes to non-English speaking customers!
Favourite shoot:
One shoot that stands out happened some time ago at the Shanghai Natural History Museum – it hadn’t yet opened to the public so we were kind of filming in secret, down a corridor, trying to interview someone who was very nervous on camera – things weren’t going too well. In the middle of it all some officials arrived, and we were told by museum staff that we must hide! We had to pack up quietly and ended up in a small side room where we managed to capture an audio recording of our interviewee. That was a different experience – it always reminds me of the movie, ‘Night at the Museum.’
Learnings:
That you always need to think on your feet! Preparation is obviously important but always expect the unexpected and you need to be able to solve things on the spot.
Best inEvidence memory:
The year we all got Fitbits and did a year-long fitness challenge to walk the distance across the globe. It was fun to see everyone out and about. I’ve joined a couple of 5KM fun runs like Batman vs. Superman Marathon and Snoopy Marathon.
Country you’ve been to on a shoot that you’d like to revisit as a tourist:
Tazmania. It’s very different to the rest of Australia and I might be able to catch the Southern Lights there – the Aurora Australis.
Country you’ve never visited that you’d like to:
Scotland.
Any pets:
I’ve adopted several cats. They’ve all got their own characteristics, and they help me de-stress. In Singapore, cats don’t roam; they’re supposed to be sterilised and stay at home. Feeding them, cleaning litter boxes… they take quite a bit of looking after, but I am glad to be able to give them a home.
Favourite food:
I’m not much of a foodie. Put it this way – if I find myself in a food court with friends… I’ll go to the place with the shortest queue!
Last binge-watch:
The Next Level Chef, I do enjoy a culinary competition and home improvement shows.
Three words that describe you:
Resourceful. Quick-thinking. Decisive.
