Transforming Aged Care with Innovation and Empathy
Exceptional Customer Story Academy Award Winner 2025

There’s a universal truth we all understand: the desire to ensure our loved ones, especially our elders, receive the best possible care and comfort. It’s a deeply human instinct. We want them to feel safe, respected, and connected, regardless of where they live. But what happens when distance becomes a barrier? In a country as vast as Australia, the tyranny of distance isn’t just a concept; it’s a daily reality for thousands of families. For those with elderly relatives in regional or remote aged-care facilities, a simple health concern can quickly escalate into a logistical and emotional ordeal, involving long, stressful journeys to city hospitals for specialist consultations. This was the precise challenge that our partners at Uniting, a leading not-for-profit care provider, were determined to solve. They saw firsthand the anxiety and disruption that hospital transfers caused for their residents, and they knew there had to be a better way.

The Human Cost of a Kilometre

Imagine being a senior resident in a comfortable, familiar aged-care home. It’s your community, your safe space. Suddenly, a non-emergency but urgent health issue arises – a skin condition that needs a dermatologist’s opinion, or a wound that isn’t healing correctly. The standard procedure often involves an ambulance, a long road trip to the nearest major hospital, hours in an unfamiliar emergency department, and then the long trip back. The physical toll is significant, but the emotional cost is even higher. It’s disorienting, frightening, and often, completely avoidable. For the care staff on the ground, it’s a source of immense frustration. They are dedicated and highly skilled, but they lack immediate access to the specialist knowledge that could resolve the issue on-site. They are forced to escalate care, knowing the disruption it will cause. This was the cycle Uniting wanted to break. They needed a solution that could bring the specialist to the resident, not the other way around.

We realized that the greatest barrier to exceptional care wasn’t a lack of expertise, but the physical distance that separated our residents from it.

This is where technology, when guided by empathy, can become truly transformative. The conversation shifted from ‘How do we transport people better?’ to ‘How do we transport expertise better?’ The goal wasn’t just to be more efficient; it was to be more compassionate. It was about preserving the dignity and comfort of every single resident. We began exploring a future where a clinical specialist in Sydney could have a direct, real-time presence in a regional care home hundreds of kilometres away. A future where technology didn’t replace the human touch, but enhanced it, empowering local nurses with the confidence and guidance of world-class experts. This vision was the starting point for a remarkable collaboration, one that would fundamentally change the way Uniting delivered care in its most isolated locations.

Seeing Through a New Lens

The solution came from combining two powerful technologies: smart glasses and our own TeamViewer Frontline augmented reality platform. On the surface, it sounds futuristic, but in practice, it’s beautifully simple and human-centric. A registered nurse at a remote Uniting facility, when faced with a situation requiring specialist input, simply puts on a pair of smart glasses. Instantly, a clinical nurse consultant or geriatrician, sitting in their office in a major city, sees exactly what the local nurse is seeing, in high definition. They can hear what the nurse hears and speak directly with both the nurse and the resident. The remote expert becomes a virtual presence in the room. They can guide the nurse through an examination, ask them to zoom in on a specific area, and provide immediate diagnostic advice and a clear treatment plan. It’s an intimate, collaborative process. The local nurse provides the essential hands-on care, while the remote specialist provides the crucial diagnostic layer. It’s the perfect fusion of local presence and global expertise.

The moment a remote specialist can truly see the situation firsthand, the dynamic changes from guesswork to guided, confident action.

This isn’t just a video call. The augmented reality component allows the specialist to project arrows, circles, or instructions directly into the nurse’s field of vision on the smart glasses. They can literally point to the area of concern, ensuring there is no miscommunication. This hands-free interaction means the on-site nurse can continue their work uninterrupted, providing comfort and care to the resident while receiving expert guidance. The technology fades into the background, and what remains is a focused, human-to-human medical consultation. For the resident, the experience is far less intimidating. Instead of a stressful trip, they are being cared for by a familiar face in a familiar setting, with the quiet reassurance that a top specialist is overseeing their care. It restores a sense of control and calm to what was once a chaotic and frightening process.

The Numbers That Tell a Human Story

When Uniting implemented this solution, the results were more profound than anyone had anticipated. The data speaks for itself, but behind each number is a story of improved quality of life. They saw a staggering 62% reduction in residents needing to be transferred to a hospital for specialist consultations. Think about what that means: hundreds of stressful, disruptive, and costly journeys were completely eliminated. Residents were able to stay in their homes, in their communities, receiving the care they needed right where they were. Furthermore, the clinical response time for urgent cases was cut by an incredible 75%. What might have taken hours or even a day to resolve – waiting for a doctor’s availability or organising transport – could now be addressed in minutes. This speed isn’t just about efficiency; it’s about providing peace of mind to residents and their families, knowing that expert help is available almost instantly.

True innovation isn’t just measured in efficiency gains, but in the tangible improvement of human dignity and well-being.

This initiative fundamentally empowered Uniting’s on-site staff. They felt more supported, more capable, and more confident in their ability to handle complex situations. It fostered a culture of learning and collaboration, bridging the professional isolation that can often be felt in remote healthcare settings. This story is a perfect illustration of our core belief at TeamViewer. We are committed to helping our partners ‘Find Your Better’ – a better way of working, a better way of connecting, and a better way of caring. For Uniting, ‘better’ meant reducing the burden of distance, enhancing the skills of their staff, and above all, placing the comfort and dignity of their residents at the heart of everything they do. It’s a powerful reminder that the most impactful technology is the kind that helps us be more human, more connected, and more empathetic in a world that often feels too disconnected.
